THORNTON COUNTRY RETREAT B&B
220 MULGOWIE ROAD, THORNTON, THORNTON, THE LOCKYER VALLEY, 4341
The history of Thornton Public School has been well documented and the area is correctly described as being 'rich in history and one of the most fertile valleys in the world'. Generations of families have their foundations here and many remain as a testiment to many years of back-breaking work and hardships endured in order to eek out a living from the land.
The story of Thornton Public School became a public concern when the other two small hamlets of Mulgowie and Townson were too far in distance for some children to travel. A very generous farming family by the name of McGrath, donated 14 acres of land to the School Authority in 1880. After much negotiation with this Authority the school doors finally opened in 1889 with many children riding for miles on horseback to attend. The school very soon became a local meeting place for many social functions, including Saturday night dances.
The old school house is as it was then, with the exception of extensions at both ends which have been added to carefully reflect the original style.
The headmaster's house is some 100 metres down the road. This has recently been moved back 7 metres and has been restumped ready for renovation. A tennis court once stood behind the headmaster's house, but for reasons unknown has been removed. The Headmasters' house was the first radio and parcel station and soon became imperative for weather forecasting.
Appreciate the original school rooms with their 16' VJ walls and marvel at the silky oak timberwork. The interior has been decorated in an old world theme to compliment the school and the walls are adorned with many original paintings commissioned by us from local artists as a reminder of a time long ago.
The Garden Cottage "Avalon" is located behind the old school in the back garden. Open plan and airy, yet private, the wood panelled cottage with it's cathedrial ceilings is a delightful combination of old and new. Tastefully decorated, the cottage features include a Queen bed and a double sofa bed, lounge area with library, games, radio/CD and TV/DVD, reading area, front and rear screen enclosed verandahs, dining area and kitchenette. For your convenience we provide ceiling fans, oil heating and reverse cycle air conditioning. A Federation ensuite bathroom features a claw foot bath and all luxuries are supplied; gowns and slippers, bath salts, fragrant soaps and other accessories, heater and hairdryer. A hat stand offers beanies, hats, bags and umbrellas for your use during your stay with us.
We sit snugly between the Great Dividing and Little Liverpool Ranges, and the views from both verandahs are magnificent. The front verandah scenery is a picture perfect back garden that gently rolls down to Laidley Creek. The rear verandah scenery overlooks the other side of the property with a stunning view towards Cunningham's Gap.
